The Double Crunch Challenge | Day 1

eating spinach for health

Day 1 of the Double Crunch Primal Stride Challenge has me sitting straight up in my chair with spinach in my stomach. I’ve developed a nice little routine: Every time I get up for a glass of water or tea I do 50 crunches. It’s 10am, I’ve been up for 5.5hrs, and I’ve met my challenge goal of 250crunches/day already. Yes!

Now, about you. Yes, YOU! Have you signed up for this hot and bothered week of joy otherwise known as the Double Crunch Challenge?

If you’ve not yet joined but you’d like to, let me know in the comments and I’ll add your blessed name

Double Crunch Day 1 is completed.

I have another migraine today, residual from yesterday most likely, and nowhere near as bad. I’ll live. :)

    • Seth Simonds 08. Jan, 2010 at 8:56 am #

      Way to go!

I’m sorry about your headache. I feel so lucky after talking to you that I’m generally without malady. However, I don’t have volunteer papayas in my yard, either. =)

      • Laurie Ashton Farook 08. Jan, 2010 at 7:39 pm #

Well, yeah, there’s always a bit of give and take…

You also probably don’t have neighborhood purple-faced langur monkeys, either. Or parrots or other tropical birds. Or monitor lizards that invade your garden…

In many ways, I’m very very very blessed. :)

    • Sherry Kerr 08. Jan, 2010 at 11:39 am #

Laurie, you are doing amazingly well to complete your challenges with a migraine. Kudos to you for your perseverance!

      • Laurie Ashton Farook 08. Jan, 2010 at 7:38 pm #

Oh, no, please do not misunderstand. The migraines happened AFTER the exercises were done. AFTER. This is very important. :)

If it had been before exercises, I wouldn’t have gotten them done. With migraines, I’m flat in bed with eye mask on and A/C on waiting for drugs to kick in, if they kick in. I don’t bother with silly little things like exercise that’ll only make me feel worse or, you know, pass out. ;)

  2. Dre 08. Jan, 2010 at 9:30 am #

Will be blogging later about my very first Shrek in a Blender, a new veggie tasting, and 100 crunches…

I’m feeling extra adventurous today! lol

  3. Sarah Joy Albrecht 08. Jan, 2010 at 9:55 am #

    I’m in for challenge #2.

Spinach twice today and 250 crunches :)

  4. tra 08. Jan, 2010 at 10:04 am #

DONE! i did this: 10X100 m runs at 8.1 with 25 crunches in between. thereby getting 250 crunches done before 6 am! =D

green vegetable: green beans! i’m having a big chinese chicken salad for LUNCH!

  5. Simo 08. Jan, 2010 at 10:33 am #

    Day 1 – not complete :S
    http://lxxiii.blogspot.com/2010/01/primal-stride-challenge-2-day-1.html

I walked 5 KM but I couldn’t do the crunches .. I started but my back started making weird sounds around number 36 so I stopped there .. I think I’ll just stick with the walking for this week also .. it’s safer for me ..

    • Gina Fit by 41 Maybe 42 08. Jan, 2010 at 2:02 pm #

It was a good idea to stop. Just tightening your tummy muscles while sitting (even walking) is beneficial, too.

      Good job on the 5K.

    • Laurie Ashton Farook 08. Jan, 2010 at 7:42 pm #

I agree. Injuring yourself=not good. Being prudent about your body is.

Congrats on doing the walking. :)

  6. April Riggs 08. Jan, 2010 at 11:34 am #

Alright, this challenge I can handle! I started my day w/100 crunches and will do my other 150 after work and after my hot yoga class. I can’t wait!!

Didn’t consume any exciting greens yet, but did have some chicken korma at this fabulous Indian restaurant and I added mixed veggies: cauliflower, green beans, bell peppers and carrots. I have not gone to the store so I’m not sure what green veggies will end up in my dinner, but I’ll holler back later!

  7. Sherry Kerr 08. Jan, 2010 at 11:34 am #

I stayed up way too late last night; it isn’t every night you get to see your football team win the National Championship, and I wasn’t going to miss a second of it! But I woke up early (4:30) anyway and did my first couple of sets of stairs. I just finished the rest without mishap. ;-) A big bonus: every time I went downstairs, I looked for something that needed to go back up, and vice versa, so my house is neater!

Later today, as long a walk as I can handle. Tonight: green bell peppers with dinner.

    • BabsCampbell 08. Jan, 2010 at 12:25 pm #

Way to be productive! Maybe I’ll add the “every time I went downstairs, I looked for something that needed to go back up,” routine to my indoor walking.

    • Laurie Ashton Farook 08. Jan, 2010 at 7:44 pm #

Hah! Productivity mixed with exercise – way smart! Very cool!

  8. April Riggs 08. Jan, 2010 at 11:35 am #

Oh and add me to the list! I tried but kept getting an error message!

    • Seth Simonds 08. Jan, 2010 at 12:34 pm #

      Gotcha.

  9. Sherry Kerr 08. Jan, 2010 at 11:43 am #

By the way, Seth, your water/exercise routine is a great idea. Maybe water could be part of an upcoming challenge?

    • Shelli Belly 08. Jan, 2010 at 12:22 pm #

OOOOO I’d sign up for a water challenge too.

      • Shelda 08. Jan, 2010 at 4:37 pm #

        Me too!

        • Seth Simonds 08. Jan, 2010 at 8:04 pm #

          You got it. =)

  10. Shelli Belly 08. Jan, 2010 at 12:24 pm #

    Hi Seth,
I signed up last night. I’ve completed 50/250 so far. I’ll blog about the first day tonight. I’m so excited for a 7day challenge. A co-worker is doing it with me and emailing me everytime she crunches. :-)

I slept in today. I didn’t get to bed until really late again and my BG was 274 first thing this morning, so I couldn’t work out. I just got back from my diabetes educator appointment and I HAVE INSULIN! So, things will start getting SO much better for me. I’ll finally feel like I’m keeping up with all of you Primal Stride Animals!
Good job everyone. . I’m trying to try a NEW green veggie each day and still have to make it to the store to discover one.

    • Dre 08. Jan, 2010 at 12:49 pm #

I’m glad you got insulin! lol @ Primal Stride Animals…

I’m glad you’re doing at least half the challenge way to go!

    • Laurie Ashton Farook 08. Jan, 2010 at 7:45 pm #

I’m glad you’re taking care of yourself AND getting insulin. :)

    • Babscampbell 08. Jan, 2010 at 8:10 pm #

K, I got my 250 in and ate just lame ol’ lettuce as my green today. I’ll be shopping for something new tomorrow. Good job everyone! Way to make a commitment and make it happen! See you all tomorrow!

  12. April Riggs 08. Jan, 2010 at 1:47 pm #

    WE ARE ALL rocking it!!

    Challenge 2, Day 1 report:

Includes EASY broccoli recipe (that kids also like) and a reminder/how-to to stretch your abs.

  14. Irene aka FitHungryGurl 08. Jan, 2010 at 3:41 pm #

250 crunches done and accounted for at 6:30pm. Woohoo!

    • Seth Simonds 08. Jan, 2010 at 8:06 pm #

      Woohoo indeed!

I’m glad you decided to rock this challenge with us!

  15. Shelda 08. Jan, 2010 at 4:39 pm #

I did my three greenies today (broccoli, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts), but still need to do the CORE workout.

But I’m on it, will get to it soon. And I’m headed to the store to stock up on more green things for tomorrow.

  16. Shelli Belly 08. Jan, 2010 at 5:21 pm #

Had a great challenge today. I had email wars with a coworker. I started it off this morning by emailing her 50/250 then 100/250 etc. Back and forth I’d send an update. Then at the end of the day she stormed into my room and laid on the floor and hammered out her first 50. Great fun.

The greens went down but really green is not my favorite color. So I’m trying a smoothie tomorrow.

Week 2 Day 1 in the books along with 30 minutes on the eliptical and 15 minutes lifting weights.

    • Lauren 08. Jan, 2010 at 7:00 pm #

How fun! I’m glad you got her involved ;D. So glad you enjoyed it!

If you want the smoothie to not look green, I’ve heard of people adding beets to their green smoothies! You can make the smoothies with some juice in them, I’ve even added protein powder and lemon zest in addition to spinach and kale =D.

      • Seth Simonds 08. Jan, 2010 at 8:12 pm #

I’ve had beet smoothies before. They’re good but fairly intense. Beets+spinach = Deep purple/brown.

Frozen banana + frozen grapes + pineapple + spinach = perfect noob shrek smoothie. Cold and sweet! =)

    • Babscampbell 08. Jan, 2010 at 7:06 pm #

I LOVE this story. . how funny, I just imagine some woman stomping into my office, throwing herself on the floor and busting out a bunch of crunches. . ROFLMBO!

I need to figure out this smoothie you all keep talking about.

    • Laurie Ashton Farook 08. Jan, 2010 at 7:46 pm #

      That’s just too funny! :D

  17. Michelle@Eatingjourney 08. Jan, 2010 at 6:49 pm #

don’t hate on us in Oz..I am in.

    day 1 done..day 2 in progress.

    burn abs burn…disco inferno.

    • Seth Simonds 08. Jan, 2010 at 8:28 pm #

      Gotcha.

      Btw, amazing video today.

I hope you’re able to banish what the scale represents for you. That’s freedom to fuel, to grow, and to live.

  18. Lauren 08. Jan, 2010 at 6:56 pm #

Today was great! I did my 50 crunches & 50 reverse crunches before school, then had a dinner of edamame beans, wilted spinach and an egg. Pure comfort food, and a great start to the week! I also did 3K, and I must say that making sure I do that has given me more energy. Its fantastic and I feel great!

    • Seth Simonds 08. Jan, 2010 at 8:15 pm #

You are rocking my world with your cheery updates and amazing progress!

I’m still waiting to hear what a reverse crunch is! =)

      • Lauren 08. Jan, 2010 at 8:54 pm #

Oh, sorry! A reverse crunch (at least thats what I call them) are when you lie on your back and instead of lifting your head and shoulders, you lift your legs and butt and lower back off the ground. I keep my knees somewhat bent, and with my legs at a 90 (or closer to me) degree to the ground. With my arms anchoring me on the ground, straight and slightly away from my body. You also keep your head on the ground. Then, you tilt your pelvis back, rolling it as you pull your hips and lower back off the ground, and slowly lowering them back down. The movement uses your abs, it isn’t done by swinging your legs. Hope that makes sense!

  19. LoneWolf 08. Jan, 2010 at 8:19 pm #

Had to take a half pass on this today — I got the green veggies. Celery sticks with peanut butter. Simple and tasty.

However, I just didn’t get the crunches in. Now the pressure is on for the next 6 days!

I did continue the rising at 7:00 though.

    • Seth Simonds 08. Jan, 2010 at 8:29 pm #

Yeah! Combo challenges are THE thing for 2010! =)

You deserve the pass. Pressure is on, sir!

  20. Mike Brown 08. Jan, 2010 at 8:44 pm #

Ate the first raw apple of my life this morning. As I tweeted (@Brainzooming), it was kind of like swimming – I can do it, but not sure I’ll rush to do it again.

Just did the 250 crunches…a lot easier than the 5k, that’s for sure! My 5k cardio substitue was shoveling the drive way and the roof (don’t ask) at various times during the day.

Tomorrow, it’s the first raw pear ever. Hopefully I’ll be able to find other fruits along the way, or I’ll wind up switching back to veggies.

  21. Cammi99 09. Jan, 2010 at 7:06 am #

I’ll be back to check out the recipes later after my hike–it may hit 30F today, Heat Wave! Veggies: stir-fried kale with lentils and diced tomatoes. Even the family liked it. 250 crunches; back is a little sore, so I will concentrate on form today.

    Great job everyone!
