Good morning, Striders!
First, an apology. I’ve been camping in the woods with my family. This is good in that I’ve been able to relive the frozen toes and blinding campfire smoke of my childhood. This has been unfortunate in that I haven’t been able to be around for you guys. That might be a good thing though. You see, if you and I meet up for coffee sometime (which I hope to!), we won’t be interrupted by a ringing cellphone or stream of texts. I’ll be with you completely. That said, camping ends today so I’ll be back near high-speed web access and won’t have to go adventuring to find it.
Second, check out this gorgeous photo! Strider Patricia took it on her first Five At Five challenge jog of 2010.
What I’d like to do is create a gallery of early morning images from as many of you as possible. All you have to do is snap a quick photo of what some part of your early morning looks like. You can submit your photo by emailing it to me, posting on your blog and sending me the link, using twitpic, or (if you have a Flickr account) click on the image above to view the Flickr pool for this challenge.
I’ll create a photo gallery at the end of the week so we can all get a feel for what it’s like to go for a bit of early morning exercise around the world!
For my update:
Day 2 wasn’t as easy. The 5k wasn’t an issue. Getting up early was. It dropped below freezing last night in Perdido Key, Florida and the breeze had calmed as I lay in my sleeping bag, watching my breath rise in questioning clouds. Would I crawl out of my nest of warm flannel and make a solid go of the day?
Yes, I would. I did. It wasn’t so bad. I’ve found that the trick to getting up early is to commit to doing so the night before. If I wait until the morning to decide when to get up, my fuzzy brain nearly always chooses sleep over action.
I wanted to sleep this morning but I chose action instead.
What did you choose?
Don’t forget to submit your pics!

2 January 2010 – I think I’m throwing dates in so you know which date I’m talking about, ‘kay? Plus I’m just anal that way.
Done and done. What I didn’t do was hydrate before walking, so I started getting a bit lightheaded at the end. Lightheaded=not good, but also not unusual for me. Really, I need to switch from water to electrolytes with salt first thing in the morning – that would be even better for me and would help to minimize the lightheadedness bit.
I increased the laps from 15 to 16. Right knee is acting up a bit, but that’s also not unusual for me.
Hey Laurie, I may be selfish but reading that you already finished with your challenge for the day is a real motivation for me!
Good for you, it’s great that you increased the laps, take care of your knee and have a great day.
Good to know I’m good for something.
Hi Laurie, just in case you are ready to do your third day challenge or you already finished with it.. regardless of the time difference, you’re not alone.
Have a great Sunday!
Patricia
Day 2 – Complete

I’m going to blog about this later, or I’ll be late for work. However, I am proud to state, DID IT. lol That sunrise is gorgeous my walk might have to be extra special to get a cool pic like that in my area tomorrow
Yes! Good for you!
I’m looking forward to seeing your photos!
thank you!
Good job Dre! Keep it up.
You too! thanks!
Checking in for day 2 – up before 5 and out the door at 5 – today is the big move and I am not prepared for it. Not sure how far I walked – at the old house today and do not have a route mapped out. So, I left the house – walked for half an hour and then turned around and walked back – so distance may be short – but with the day in front of me – tomorrow I will be lucky to get out of bed. No photos this morning – it is still pitch black – no sunrise until around 7. Hope you all had a great morning – see you tomorrow -
I hope your move goes well! Remember, huge trash bags work for everything but china.
I learned that from a friend who used to rob houses with his friends. He scared the daylights out of me when he helped me move and used trash bags for just about everything.
Nothing was damaged though… perhaps he was right? I hope you have lots and lots of help with your move. Great job this morning!
See you tomorrow! You ARE ROCKING THIS!!
Good luck with the big move! And yes, the walk for a half and turn around is how I did it this morning. My pedometer seriously hates me but I know I did a chip-timed 5K last summer in 54 minutes walking the whole way.
Done zo- got up at 4:45 AM, treadmill = 2.0 miles, bike = 10 miles. Will be doing 1.5 miles running later today.
that is a GORGEOUS PICTURE!
AWESOME!
I hope you’ll submit a photo of your own. Doesn’t have to be anything crazy. Just something from your morning.
Way to rock the workout!
Day 1, kids woke up several times in the night. I finally got up at 8. Ran up and down stairs throughout the day about 100 times). Concentrated on green veggies throughout the day — vs. not eating and then being starving by dinner time.
Day 2 – woke at 7. Really, this is huge. I tend to stay up till 2-3a, writing, and then waking 9/10, after my kids wake up. We start school at 10:30, so this always has be running behind from the moment I wake. Felt really good after snacking on greens throughout the day yesterday. Did the same today (spinach smoothie for lunch!) and realized I didn’t have any coffee (cool!) to keep me awake. Ran up and down the steps in 10 set intervals, rest in b/t, when I woke up. (It’s been snowing pretty badly here.. kinda confined indoors
)
Feeling good. 5am is a goal. I hope to take a picture of the (snowy?) sunrise to share
LoneWolf checking in … Day 2 complete.

Up at 6. Bundled up for a walk in the freeze, forgot the camera. Boring views here anyway. Came home, showered, had some cocoa, and crawled back into the flannels LOL. Didn’t sleep, just snuggled with a cat.
Seth, I wanted to ask you, can we do the treadmill? I live in the frozen tundra and it’s usually around zero in the mornings. Beautiful pic!
Stay warm! Be safe! Get fit! =)
Sounds like a great plan!!!!
Yay for day two! Much better. I took my morning jog on my Wii Fit and posted a picture to the flickr group that you started. The view was beautiful and I even passed George Clooney along the way!
hehe! Awesome.
I’m glad you didn’t let yesterday get you down and out. Way to stick with it and make something good happen for YOU.
If you waved to George… might be taking it too far. =)
I didn’t wave but I did catch myself smiling back. lol
Day 2 was great! I walked my 3k, then came home and shoveled (and had a lovely lunch of quinoa, beans, vegetables, and curry topped with an egg at a local cafe – which I need to recreate at home stat!).
That sounds amazing. Photo time on the blog with that one!
at 5am was wondering if I was nuts on a saturday to get up that early
…met sylvia at a dark street corner and off we went her dog in tow, walked for 3 miles…then dropped them off & had a second wind, went 4 more miles…jogging about 3, walking for 1…
really happy I did it and felt proud of myself for getting back in the groove…really was thinking when I was out there that there is no excuse not to get it done, was a gorgeous morning…
now my foot (planter fascitis) is throbbing so icing it throughout the day…right hip a bit wonky so stretching that out…ready for 5am tomorrow morning already w/sylvia again…
Great job everyone!

Plantar fasciitis sucks.
You have my sympathy.
You did great on beating your goals!
Thanks much Laurie!
Great pictures! And what neighbours are actually up at 5 looking out at the street corners 8=)
haha very true!
Jamie, I’m dealing with PF, too, and even blogged about it today. Oh, I hope it heals quickly.
No pun intended.
Seth = Good job rolling out of a WARM sleeping bag to get your workout in on time! My cell phone woke me up at 4 when my sister texted me that it was -21 and she wished I was there. I texted her back that it was going to be clear, sunny and 70…. I got up, dressed, stretched and ran. It is dark so unless you want to see streets illuminated by a flashlight, there won’t be any photos coming anytime soon.
Happy camping!
Tell your sister that she needs to get her act together and not send 4am texts! =)
I’m home for tomorrow’s workout so getting up won’t be such a chore. Still working to get the wood smoke smell off me.
I’m glad you’re stretching, too. I always regret when I’ve been too lazy or forgot to stretch.
A caveat about stretching…
Hypermobile people should not stretch. Warm up the muscles, yes. Stretch, no. Hypermobile people (like myself) usually don’t know what a normal range of motion is, so when stretching, tend to stretch way beyond normal, and that can lead to permanent damage.
I can’t believe I got my 5K run in today – but I did it! (Here’s my update) and if it weren’t for this challenge I probably wouldn’t have worked out – so thanks!
Day 2 Complete, despite ice and frigid winds!
Well done! =)
I saw your website challenge on another blog, can’t remember which or maybe it was more than one! I am & always have been an early morn workout person EXCEPT when I was working full time & there were no 24 hour gyms. Now, saying that, my early morn is the middle of the night for most so a pic would be in the dark or inside my 24 hour gym!
I do go out early on Sunday morn for a jog outside right at sunrise.. love that!
Looks like you are doing great!
Done! Knee is fine (bruised and scabby, but fine).
I’m so glad you didn’t let the fall get you down for good!
I hope your knee heals quickly! =)
The alarm went off around 5 but didn’t roll out until 5:54 a.m. Got the 5+k in this afternoon on the elliptical trainer – Did it about 50 seconds faster than yesterday. Haven’t figured out what the end of week goal is for completing it, but would be nice to shave another 40-50 seconds off the time. We’ll see.
I’ve started to time my shorter runs. I still do my best to ignore times on the longer ones because I’m still so heavy and just doing the distance is a good achievement in itself.
I’m in a slightly different place with the cardio portion of the challenge. The 5k is less than I usually do in a cardio workout, so the big challenge for me is going every day. I work toward a monthly cardio minutes goal, so this has been good to get me to the gym very consistently!
Day 2 brought the entire family out with me. Day started at 6 am. Check out our progress here… http://meatymatron.wordpress.com/2010/01/02/post002/
