So how did I do? I got lucky on waking up early. A last-minute drive to Florida to meet up with siblings for a bit of camping meant I was awake at 4:25am, listening to the wind whip at the tarp covering our tent. The 5k was a joy of white sand, laughter, and conversation with some of the coolest people in the world. Hanging out with family (if you don’t want to kill each other) is a good way to start off a new year, I think. Today was fairly easy for me. I’ve a feeling that won’t be the case later in the week.
How about you? Did you meet your goal time? Did you get your distance out of the way in time? Let us know in a comment!
If you’re blogging through your challenge, make sure to include a link so we can come leave comments on your updates through the week.

Turns out I decided I would throw this on my blog. The first entry is here.
Um, about that challenge post you plan on doing every day…
Here it is, 9:49am my time, and I completed my challenge hours ago, and I have no where to check in. I’m feeling all… lonely or something.
And I don’t know what to dooooooooo….
I know, I know, it’s one of the problems of being in a time zone ahead of the Norte Americanos.
Just leave a comment on whatever the latest post is and I’ll move it into the new thread when I update. Wordpress is classy like that. =)
I’m so psyched that you nailed your first day of the challenge! Well done! Just be careful. We want you to stay healthy!
=) Happy New Year!
But… But… But I use WordPress and I can’t move comments. Do you use a plugin for that or is there some supersecret back door thingamabobbie that allows that?
Is anyone checking in on the first day of the first week challenge? Seth? You get up and run your 5K?
I’m up and done and off for a polar bear plunge and then a rollerblade race.
Yeah, I did! I was camping over the holiday… sorry about the delay! Future posts should be up in the early AM for the rest of the week. I moved your comment over to the new thread to make sense of things.
A polar bear plunge sounds like fun! Update with pics of all the shivering polar bears! =)
Happy New Year!
I did it! Up at 5. I walked the 3 miles in one hour as planned.
It was AMAZING. Dark. Quiet. 18 degrees. Time to think. View was great. Christmas lights lingered.
I was feeling so elated at the end of my walk, then, boom, down I go. I slipped on a patch of black ice at the base of my driveway. Slammed my left knee into the road. I had two layers of pants and still managed to scrape the skin.
Felt like a fat fool. I sat in the road begging God to not let this slow me down. I was able to get up and walk back in. It’s hurting. Elated feeling gone.
Any and all, please send me some good vibes and prayers. Thank you.
Don’t give up Gina! Look after the knee and don’t feel foolish. Remember the beginning and look to the future.
Saying a prayer for you now.
Oh Gina, that smarts! I’ll be honest, weather accumulations are a HUGE part of why I won’t walk first thing in the morning. Rest up, take some pain medication, and get some ice-melt down on that driveway later.
Aw, so sorry to hear you injured yourself. Take care of yourself and feel better soon.
You’re not a fat fool! I see skinny smart people fall on black ice all the time!
I’m chubby and I tend to slip on the stuff as well.
Point being, falling doesn’t make you any less amazing.
Sending you oodles of good vibes and energy for the coming days.
You can do this! Just go easy and take care of that knee!
Well, I managed to only be 20 minutes late for my target (7:20 rather than 7:00). Not bad after staying up with the Sweet Mama and the WolfCubs ’til 1:00 8=)
Video is in post production and will be posted soon…
I’m excited to see the video. We finally get to see where all that firewood comes from. =)
20 minutes late isn’t bad at all. What matters is that you started 2010 with a challenge that (in spite of leaving you a bit tired) is really, really good for you.
I’m lucky to have cool people like you on board with this.
Thanks Seth. The video is proving to be a challenge though. I managed to cut it into 2 parts just under 10 minutes each (for YouTube limits). However, there are some issues with the upload — may have something to do with my AV/Firewall. Had some other issues uploading mp3 files on SermonPlayer this week too.
Hopefully it will all be sorted out tomorrow (or later this evening).
Shalom!
Had to use my old laptop (now my daughter’s) to upload (took 30 minutes per rather than 1 or 2) but they’re up. Watch them at Howls while I go out for Day 2.
http://blogs.wolfpawroad.com/preparation/fitness/2010/01/primalstride-challenge-5-at-5-day-1/
I’m in, but won’t be getting up at 5am. For me it will be 6am. (Not starting today as I’ve already missed it!). I am also working on 6 days of walking the 5K instead of 7. I guess it’s time to go start on that!
Not doing so well here. Didn’t make my modified wake up time.
Yesterday I got the 5K in, but not today. I’m also working on Biggest Loser wii fit. Since it takes me 75 minutes to walk the 5K adding the BL suggested workout is just too much. So I now have a modified modified plan. 5K on the days the game doesn’t suggest a workout. Walking to finish out an hour of exercise on the days it does suggest one.
Wild offspring – I like that! LOL
I didn’t make the 6:00 wakeup. Wild offspring indeed. The teenager didn’t get home till 2 am from her NYE party and like a good momma I stayed up waiting for her.
And we’re about to head to the mall for indoors walking and windowshopping.
Oh, and I’m tweeting at https://twitter.com/GoodyScrivener
Did ~2 miles at the mall before the Wild Offspring decided they’d had enough. Went out and did 2 more after they were confirmed to be soundly asleep.
I really should see if I can get a used treadmill or stationary bike or something. Walking in winter is a pain.
It’s also very cold!
It was barely below freezing here this morning but that’s an oddity. It’s usually in the 40’s-50’s.
Having grown up in New England, I know what you mean about winter walking. Comfy boots and hot tea make it easier.
Skip the treadmill, keep walking outside, and treat yourself to a weekend spa retreat when you reach your goal. Perfect! =)
I got one when I had my first child. I was getting real depressed and knew I needed exercise, but I didn’t want to take him out in the cold. The treadmill helped with that a lot. Good luck finding them. Check into your newspapers classified online ads – you might get lucky.
Hi everyone, hi Seth, Happy New Year!
I forgot to make it official by posting a comment but I’m in and I started today as planned.
Only six days to go!
Gina, congratulations! Sorry about your knee, take it easy today and hope you will be able to go back tomorrow.
Laurie, time change and everything, we are together on this so forget about feeling lonely!
Seth, how did it go for you?
Hi Seth, I’m in and already left a post about it on the other thread.
Your first day of the year and of the challenge sounds great. Hope the next six days are just as good.
Happy New Year!
Oh boy. This is off to a rough start. I moved your initial comment over. =)
I’ll update the list now. So excited you decided to join! I hope you’ll share a pic or two of what your early morning looks like? Perhaps we can get others to take a photo and make a post just of those. That’d be lovely.
Happy New Year!
Oh Seth, I would love to because as I told you before, I’m on vacation at the beach and I have some beautiful pictures of today’s sunrise (I had already finished the challenge when the sun came out)… but as I’m a little bit technologically challenged… how can I upload a picture? or should I email it to you?
You can email it to sethsimonds@gmail.com
We can get some others to send in pics and create a gallery for the challenge of what early morning looks like around the world. Fun!
That sounds great!
I can do that! I’ll (hopefully remember to) take a picture of my front garden tomorrow morning and I’ll post it to my blog. You can steal it from there, or I can email it to you, Seth.
hey HEYYYYYYY. i did 1.5 miles on the treadmill – 1/2 was sprinting at 8.1 and 1/2 was walking, and then i biked 4 miles (stationary bike). woke up at 4:45 AM!
HEEEEYYYY! =)
You rocked it!
Stop making me look bad. I’m trying to be a role model or something. =P
Today was definitely my mess up day.. I know! I know! What a way to start … I’m ashamed enough to go through with it tomorrow now! haha just kidding.. I did the walking though, just around noon time.. I was up until 2:30 AM making New Years bread for the family..
You made half of the challenge today and I’m sure we’ll all forgive you if you email us some of that bread 8=)
See you tomorrow.
I’m not sure how good it’ll taste through e-mail =P lol but I’m always up for sharing!
/me demands bread.
/hands slice.
I hope there’s some left. =)
I just want to know what kind of bread you make specially for New Years. I’m also a bread-making person, but I only use sourdough (wild yeast), never commercial yeast. I might even ask you for a recipe…
And pictures…
I made Vasilopita for my grandpa you cut it on new years to bless the house and bring in good luck and we also wrap a washed coin in aluminum foil and place it into the dough before baking. Then you slice the cake, the first piece is for the house then for the family then visitors in order from oldest to youngest and whoever gets the coin gets good luck for the year. I can definitely send a recipe and pictures.. I burned the egg wash on it this year.. the bread is untouched and tastes great it’s just a darker colour than it should be on top lol
It sounds good to eat.
What a cool tradition! =)
Well – I was out of bed by 4:45 – amazing can not remember the last time I did that. The last 2 years seem to be a blur, lots of life changing events.
I did not make it the 3 plus miles – I did make it 2 – although for most this is a holiday I had to work… so to make up the 1 plus miles I missed…. I will be climbing stairs during my breaks –
thanks for the challenge – I really needed the kick in the tush
4:45!!! Getting up that early makes earlier bedtimes less of a struggle, too. =)
I’m so glad you decided to join! This will be fun! Well, sorta. The results will be enjoyable. It’s nice to make a decision and stick with it.
2 miles is excellent! I like your cross training solution. Happy climbing!
I didn’t get it in yesterday. However…i set my damn alarm for 5am..after going to bed at 1am. Yes..that’s right….four hours of sleep…why? Cause I couldn’t let you down.
Off for some hills and an amazing view baby.
Happy 5km.
You’re so hardcore. =)
Due to my “parental ruling” I wasn’t up super early, but once I was up, I was doing all sorts of stuff!
I just got back from my 3 km of snowshoeing and it was awesome. My whole family came with and we went up and down the mountain, through the trees and forged our paths. I loved it! Can’t wait for tomorrow. This was perfect =D.
What’s up with you, Bill, and the snowshoes? We must have never had deep enough snow where I grew up to do any solid snowshoeing. Feeling like I missed out on something cool now.
That’s awesome that your brought your family along. Way to go, Lauren! I’m glad you joined. =)
I got up at 6:15 (Rather than my planned 6, and after going to sleep at 4AM so you gotta give me credit there !), and was able to finish my 5K !
Oh yeah, I forgot to leave the link to my blog post:
http://lxxiii.blogspot.com/2009/12/primal-stride-challenge-1-day-1.html
You get tons of credit. Absolutely!
Heading over to your blog now. =)
Just set up a Twitter list at http://twitter.com/#/list/LoneWolfMuskoka/primalstride with all the twitterfolk who are listed above (if I missed someone @LoneWolfMuskoka to let me know).
I’m http://twitter.com/LMAshton, so add me please.
I made a bit of a late start at about 7am but got in my 3 miles
Felt good to start the year off right…I have a neighbor going w/me tomorrow morning and hope more will join too…Let’s do this!
Vibes and prayers Gina! I was jogging down an incline, down this path feeling all great and boom “ate it”, rough terrain on the mtn…lol felt so dumb…happens to all of us… (hugs)
Be sure to let us know how things went with your neighbor! As this challenge is proving yet again, it’s more fun to do things with others in tow.
I’ve eaten some dirt quite a few times. Clumsy me. Totally feeling what Gina went through… and now yours!
I might need one of those bubble outfits so I can just bounce around instead of getting banged up. =)
Well…I completed the challenge today, with one modification. 5:00 a.m. New Years Day was TOUGH. I made it out of bed around 5:30 a.m. There was snow and it was FREEZING, but I did get in the 3 miles. And it felt great! Tomorrow, 5:00 a.m. it is!
=) Yeah, the 5am start on New Year’s day was a pain for most of us. I got lucky because my family tends to hit the hay EARLY.
I’m glad you had fun!
Got up around 5 and played with the cat, then practiced reading for Church and worked setting up Brainzooming on Facebook (oh, and yeah, my wife made Belgian waffles for breakfast!).
Hit 24 Hr. Fitness this afternoon for cardio (elliptical trainer for 5k) and some strength training.
I went to church with my sister yesterday. The woman who did the reading was in her mid-60’s and had a wonderfully smooth voice and pleasant accent. It was exactly as I’d imagined Tasha Tudor to sound like as a child. Quite excellent. =)
Glad to have you along!
I am not participating in this week’s challenge officially. I am, however, participating in my own way to see if its something I can do. (I have a problem with my hip the last few months). I walked 2.25 miles in 30 minutes around 9am this morning. That’s all I could do, but it felt good.
Hi Irene!
If you’d like to get on the list, you’re more than welcome to list your modifications and I’ll add you. Otherwise, I’m glad you have you along in whatever capacity you choose!
2.25miles in 30 minutes is a FAST walk! I’m impressed!
I hope your hip improves soon!
Ok, so I have a slight little problem. Seeing as I have exams in a couple of weeks and lots of deadlines within these next two weeks, I’m usually up all night .. don’t get to bed till 3 or 4 AM .. so the early rising thing is going to do me more harm than good at this point, besides, waking up early has never been a real problem for me .. I get up at 5 or 6 on normal days anyway .. any suggestions what I should do instead ?
Personally, in that case, I’d do the exercise whenever you wake up. I wouldn’t worry about the 5am time and just wake up whenever you need to for proper rest.
It’s important that you do what’s best for your health.
I just realized, after getting 2 hours of sleep for the second consecutive night, that this is my normal during exams anyway
I remember that last year, during exam/deadline time, I was going 72 hours on 2 hours of sleep !! Besides, if I don’t get up early, I won’t be able to get the exercise done, cuz as soon as people start waking up, I’ve got lots of things to do ! Eh .. I’ll deal with it =D
You’re such a trooper.
I’m feeling a bit inspired now. ::pushes excuse off table::
=)
So excited I did it today (here’s my blog post). I’m not focusing on waking up at 5AM though (no way to do that).
I’ve already used my free pass I’m afraid. I’m a diabetic and my glucose was too high all day to work out on Day 1. This morning, I DID get up at 5, but I’m still too high to work out. I should probably be moved to the modified category. Here’s my plan to stay compliant however:
I WILL still wake up at 5am each day and will make up my miles as I’m able to exercise. For the rest of this week, if there’s a day I can’t run, I’ll make the miles up the next time I’m able. I will get 30K out of this week!
Congrats to all of you who are getting it done! I’m encouraged by all your posts and success stories. I’ll be updating on my blog each day. Go get ‘em!!
I’m glad you’re taking care of yourself. It’s important to not do yourself harm in all of this.
Waking up extra early can be difficult. Good for you for still doing it.
Done! Knee is fine.
Epic failure = one free pass used. Nuf said.
I hear you.
Tomorrow!
I finally got my blog up. Sorry for the late commenting. It took me a while to work out the blogging kinks. I’m super excited about this! Here’s my first post.
